Word Wonders - Metonymy

Definition:
A figure of speech in which a word or phrase is substituted with something closely associated with it. Metonymy allows language to gesture rather than state outright — letting a single symbol, place, or object represent a much larger idea.

Origin:
From the Greek metōnymía, meaning “a change of name.” What began as a classical rhetorical term is now woven into literature, journalism, and everyday conversation.

In Context:
A common form of metonymy uses a place to stand in for an institution, industry, or person. “Wall Street” refers to the financial sector, “the White House” to the U.S. presidential administration, and “Hollywood” to the American film industry.

Challenge:
Write a sentence that employs metonymy in a striking, poetic, or clever way. The most imaginative entry will be featured in next week’s edition.

Creature Feature - Iberian Ibex

🪴 Habitat:
The Iberian ibex (Capra pyrenaica) roams the rocky slopes and high mountains of southern Spain, including the Sierra Nevada surrounding Granada. It prefers steep, rugged terrain with cliffs and crags, where it can graze on grasses, shrubs, and herbs while remaining safe from predators. Its remarkable climbing ability allows it to navigate sheer rock faces with ease, making these remote habitats ideal for survival.

🦌 Fun Facts:
This striking mountain goat is known for its impressive curved horns, sure-footed agility, and keen eyesight. Males often grow larger, arching horns that can span over a meter, while females sport shorter, slender horns. The ibex is an expert climber, able to scale near-vertical cliffs to reach food or escape danger, making sightings both thrilling and memorable for hikers and wildlife enthusiasts.

🌍 Conservation Status:
The Iberian ibex is considered a species of least concern, though local populations can be affected by hunting and habitat disturbance. Conservation efforts focus on protecting natural mountain areas and ensuring sustainable management of grazing lands. Observing this nimble and majestic creature in its natural environment highlights the beauty and resilience of Spain’s mountainous ecosystems.

Fun Fact
Unlike many other mountain-dwelling animals, the Iberian ibex can often be seen clinging to sheer cliff faces, hopping effortlessly from ledge to ledge — a skill that keeps it safe from predators and allows it to access food sources unreachable by other herbivores.

10. Brown Butter Sage Biscuits

The key to a biscuit that has the rich, toasty flavor of brown butter and the flaky layers of a traditional biscuit? A mix of brown butter and cold cubed butter. In this recipe, we brown a portion of the butter and keep the rest untouched so it can steam in the oven and give the biscuits a light texture. The nuttiness of the brown butter is complemented by a natural companion, sage: The herb is both flecked throughout the dough and used to garnish each beautiful biscuit.

11. Mostly Apples Apple Cake

In this unabashedly apple-forward apple cake, there are so many apple slices and so little batter, you’ll wonder how (and if) it will hold together. But never fear: As the batter rises in the oven, it knits those slices together to create a tender cake that’s almost creamy and custardy due to the abundance of fruit. Our thanks to Sarah Carey, who developed this recipe, and to Dorie Greenspan, whose Marie-Hélène's Apple Cake inspired it.

12. Oatmeal-Date Smash Cookies

Watch out, oatmeal raisin — there’s a new favorite oatmeal cookie in town. The texture of these oatmeal-date cookies was inspired by the “Smash Cookies” in Zoë Francois’s cookbook, Zoë Bakes Cookies. To achieve large cookies with crisp outsides and cookie-doughy centers, Zoë bakes the dough in big balls at a relatively high temperature, then presses them down with a flat spatula (smashes them) when they come out of the oven. Packed with hearty oats and pocketed with dates, this version makes slightly smaller cookies that rely on a similar smashing technique for golden-brown exteriors and soft, bendy centers. (Thanks for the idea, Zoë!)
