Word Wonders - Gobbledygook
Definition:
A language that is meaningless or is made unintelligible by excessive use of abstruse technical terms or nonsense.
Origin:
Coined in 1944 by Maury Maverick, gobbledygook was his tongue-in-cheek way of describing confusing government jargon. Inspired by the “gobble” of a turkey, the word quickly became a go-to term for language that’s overly complicated or meaningless.
In Context:
A common form of confusing language is gobbledygook. For example: “The synergistic paradigm will leverage cross-functional metrics to optimize holistic deliverables” is pure gobbledygook — it sounds important but says very little.
Challenge:
Write a sentence that employs gobbledygook in a striking, humorous, or clever way. The most imaginative entry will be featured in the next edition
Places to Ponder - Singapore, Asia

Cradled at the crossroads of Asia and shimmering along the edge of the South China Sea, Singapore is a dazzling city-state where futuristic design, lush greenery, and vibrant multicultural heritage blend into one unforgettable experience.
🌆 Iconic Landmarks:
From the sky-piercing silhouette of Marina Bay Sands to the glowing Supertrees of Gardens by the Bay, Singapore’s skyline is a masterpiece of modern architecture. Wander through the historic streets of Chinatown and Little India, where centuries-old temples stand beside colorful shophouses.
🌿 Urban Nature Escapes:
Nicknamed the “City in a Garden,” Singapore weaves nature into its urban heartbeat. Stroll the elevated paths of MacRitchie Treetop Walk, relax on the beaches of Sentosa, or explore the wild beauty of Pulau Ubin — where mangroves, forests, and sea breezes offer a peaceful retreat from city buzz.
🎭 Culture & Cuisine:
Singapore’s soul lives in its food and festivals. Savor legendary dishes at Lau Pa Sat or explore Michelin-starred street eats at Maxwell Food Centre. From Chinese and Malay traditions to Indian and Peranakan influences, every neighborhood tells a different cultural story through flavor, art, and celebration.
🦜 Wildlife & Wonder:
Despite its urban shine, wildlife thrives here. Orangutans swing through treetops at Singapore Zoo, night creatures roam at Night Safari, and tropical birds flutter through the lush canopy of Jurong Bird Park. In Singapore, nature and innovation don’t compete — they coexist beautifully.
Creature Feature - Dusky Leaf Monkey (Trachypithecus obscurus)
🪴 Habitat:
The Dusky Leaf Monkey (Trachypithecus obscurus) inhabits the lush tropical forests of Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Thailand, and Myanmar. It prefers dense canopies and mangroves, where it can feed on leaves, fruits, and flowers while remaining hidden from predators. Its long tail and strong limbs help it navigate the treetops with ease, making the forest canopy its perfect home.
🦌 Fun Facts:
This striking primate is known for its large, expressive eyes, dark fur, and distinctive white rings around the eyes. Infants are often born with bright orange fur, which gradually darkens as they grow. Dusky leaf monkeys are social creatures, living in groups that provide protection and companionship. Observing their agile leaps and playful interactions among branches is a memorable sight for wildlife enthusiasts.
🌍 Conservation Status:
The Dusky Leaf Monkey is classified as Near Threatened, with habitat loss due to deforestation and human encroachment being major threats. Conservation efforts focus on protecting forested areas and promoting awareness of their ecological role. Seeing this gentle and acrobatic primate in its natural treetop habitat highlights the richness and fragility of Southeast Asia’s forests.
✨ Fun Fact:
Infant Dusky Leaf Monkeys are born bright orange, providing a striking contrast to their parents’ dark fur — a color change that occurs as they mature and helps them blend into the forest canopy.

Pain de Campagne (Country Bread)

This recipe comes to us from Maura Brickman, a serious home baker in Connecticut who doesn't let her bread's schedule rule her life (even though she bakes daily). Using unfed sourdough starter, minimal kneading, long fermentation, and baking in a hot Dutch oven are some of the techniques Maura employs to create bakery-quality loaf after bakery-quality loaf. Once you read through and bake this recipe yourself, you'll no doubt discover exactly how to adapt it to your own schedule — which means you may very well find yourself baking this country bread weekly (or even daily!).
Tamal de Elote en Cazuela con Ajo (Skillet Corn Tamal with Garlic)

This Mexican skillet corn tamal (also known as tamal de elote) is a faster, but just as delicious, alternative to tamales. Corn is the leading flavor, with puréed and chopped corn kernels bound together in a batter made with King Arthur Organic Masa Harina. Enjoy it warm as a hearty, spoonable accompaniment to chili or a roast, and add the optional pickled jalapenos if you seek heat. This version is lightly adapted from a similar recipe created by Pati Jinich of PBS’ Pati’s Mexican Table.
Cranberry Nut Chocolate Bark

With its delicious white and dark chocolate layers, festive red cranberries, and crunchy pecans, this holiday candy is irresistible — and easy. For cookies & cream and peppermint versions, see "tips from our bakers," below.
