Creature Feature - White Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris)

🐯 Today’s Creature Feature is the Bengal tiger—but not just any variety. We’re focusing on the rare and striking white Bengal tiger, a stunning color variation of one of the most powerful big cats on Earth. With its pale coat, bold black stripes, and piercing blue eyes, it stands out as one of nature’s most eye-catching genetic rarities.
🌿 Habitat:
The White Bengal Tiger is a rare color variant of the Bengal tiger, a subspecies of Bengal tiger. In the wild, Bengal tigers inhabit forests, mangrove swamps, and grasslands across parts of India and surrounding regions, including the Sundarbans. White variants originate from the same lineage but are extremely rare in nature. Today, they are primarily found in conservation facilities and wildlife reserves, where they are protected and cared for. Like all Bengal tigers, they rely on dense vegetation for stalking prey and staying hidden in their environment.
🦌 Fun Facts:
The white coloration comes from a recessive genetic trait that reduces orange pigment while keeping the signature black stripes intact. This means every white tiger is still fully patterned—just on a pale cream or white base. Their striking blue eyes and bold markings make them especially distinctive. Despite their appearance, they share the same strength, agility, and hunting abilities as orange Bengal tigers.
🌍 Conservation Status:
Bengal tigers are classified as Endangered, facing ongoing threats from habitat loss, poaching, and shrinking ecosystems. White tigers are not a separate wild population and are extremely rare in nature, with most existing in captivity. Conservation efforts today focus on protecting wild tiger habitats and ensuring healthy, genetically diverse populations of Bengal tigers in the wild.
✨ Fun Fact:
A white Bengal tiger can only be born if both parents carry a rare recessive gene—making this coloration an uncommon genetic combination rather than a separate species or subspecies.

New York Style Pizza

Caption from “King Arthur Baking Company
When we were dreaming up The Book of Pizza, we knew the cookbook wouldn’t be complete without a true New York slice. This recipe sets out to capture the best, real-deal version: It’s built on well-fermented dough that’s made with bread flour for just enough chew and strength to support a thin, foldable slice with a no-dip tip. Once the dough has undergone its first rise, it can be chilled for up to three days, making it easy to slot into real-life schedules. To recreate the slice-shop experience at home, we recommend re-crisping the cut slices on a baking stone or steel before serving (a cast iron pan works in a pinch).
